Alumni Concerts: Love Affair with the Oboe

NUS Centre For the Arts

Paid Admission 17 Jun 2017 - 03.00pm Shaw Foundation Alumni House, NUS

Alumni Concerts is a biannual concert series organised by the NUS Office of Alumni Relations.
It seeks to showcase alumni musical talents and promote music appreciation.

"And the oboe it is clearly understood/Is an ill wind that no one blows good."
- sang Danny Kaye in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947)

We hear it in films, on TV, in concert halls, as well as in wind bands across the country.
We know the sound—a combination of bright, nasal, velvety, singing, and melancholic.
However, the instrument that we call the oboe remains as mysterious as ever.

With a potpourri of musical pieces, oboist Howard Ng and pianist Dr Tham Horng Kent will guide you through the story of the oboe.

1. G.P. Telemann - Partita No. 2
2. J. Röntgen - Sonata No. 1 for Oboe and Piano
3. C.S. Yeo - Branyo for Oboe and Piano
4. F. Poulenc - Sonata for Oboe and Piano
