On 15 February 1942, the British surrendered to the Imperial Japanese Army, resulting in the Japanese occupation of Singapore for the next three years. The surrender followed after the last defeat at the Battle of Pasir Panjang, along Pasir Panjang Ridge — now known as Kent Ridge.

With the withdrawal of the Japanese and the British from Singapore in the 1940s and 1960s respectively, Singapore has fast assumed her role as an independent city-state. Traces and signs of our colonial and imperial past have either been erased, or have gone through drastic adaptive reuse. What remains are bronze plaques commissioned by state agencies, and numerous museums and exhibitions to remember the war.

The Last Gap is a participatory show-performance housed on the former Pasir Panjang Ridge, which is now home to the National University of Singapore. Kent Ridge campus. Together with the artist, audience-participants will examine the different manifestations of war memory — archives, textbooks, lectures, exhibits, and memorials — in a bid to remember, interrogate, and reclaim.

The Last Gap is commissioned by NUS CFA for Singapore’s Bicentennial year.
