nuSTUDIOS Film Productions

Founded in 2001, nuSTUDIOS Film Productions was introduced as NUS’ first dedicated filmmaking co-curricular activity. Since then, it has nurtured a community for students to share and deepen their passion for the artform, and has provided a space to hone abilities in the cinematic arts, with opportunities to cultivate members’ visions and voices through student short films.

nuSTUDIOS is open to beginner and experienced filmmakers, with different programs catered to each level. While it offers a foundation in filmmaking basics, students are given the opportunity to experiment with larger shapes and themes of cinema. Regular film screenings and discussions are held to widen members’ visual palettes, and develop greater appreciation and exposure to cinema’s immense cultural diversity, across genres such as the Taiwanese New Wave or Art Horror. Guided by Artistic Director Juan Foo, nuSTUDIOS’ year-long programme culminates in members undertaking short film projects, putting research and exploration as key features for story development, bringing depth and value to members’ distinct stories and ideas.

Juan Foo

Artistic Director

Juan Foo graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic (Singapore) with a Diploma in Film, Sound & Video in 1996. Later, he would go on to obtain his BFA in Creative Producing from Chapman University (USA). Additionally, Juan possesses a Professional Diploma in Creative Entrepreneurship awarded by NUS & WDA (Workforce Development Agency); and a certificate in cel animation from Yoyogi Animation Gakuin (Japan).

Juan’s journey into the film industry began in script reading and distribution for a film finance company before he moved on to freelancing in editing and production. Juan also worked in WDA, MDA and U Creative in talent development, content quality assessment and outreach.

Some of his works include Singapore’s first digital film, Return To Pontianak (1999), first HD-feature Dirty Laundry (2001) and indie-cult film Perth (2005). As a producer, Juan developed and raised project funds up to S$1M and his instinct and work in story development led to script option offers by a Hollywood studio. In the 2000s, Juan was also the first few Asian filmmakers to workshop projects in European labs like Produire-Au-Sud.

His other projects include indie-Singapore films such as Road Less Travelled (1997), Talking Cock The Movie (2002), and Unarmed Combat (2005) where he took the role of associate producer. Currently, he is the producer for Singapore’s first creature movie Circle Line (2020).

Juan conducts lectures in universities, polytechnics and private media institutions where he shares his wealth of experience with the new generation of Singaporean filmmakers. He still remains active in the industry, as an industry moderator, jury and writer earning him his candid title as the pioneer independent producer who is ‘still’ around.
