NUS Electronic Music Lab

NUS Electronic Music Lab (EML) is a unique music arts group that not only performs but creates, focusing on original music composition and production through the medium of digital software and electronic audio technology. As the face of electronic music in NUS since 1981, EML provides opportunities for young music-makers to expand their networks and showcase their works with wider audiences, cultivating the future of the local electronic music scene.

EML upholds a holistic approach for its members, teaching music production skills as well as how to perform and showcase electronically-produced music. EML prides itself in its diverse range of electronic musicians, spanning multiple genres including ambient, 8-bit chiptune, trance, dubstep, house, hip-hop, lo-fi, synthwave, and so on. Members of EML have no limits on the type of music they make. Some even blend electronic music with unconventional genres such as orchestral, jazz, or heavy metal.

EML is mentored by Benjamin Ang, EML’s dedicated principal tutor. One half of Singaporean synthpop duo, Cosmic Armchair, a certified Ableton Live trainer and a dedicated EML member since his days as a NUS student, Ben organises regular Ableton events and masterclasses for the electronic music community.

Benjamin Ang

Principal Tutor

Benjamin Ang never left the NUS Electronic Music Lab – he enjoyed his time performing, composing and recording as a student member so much that he stayed on as alumni, then became a tutor, and was eventually appointed Principal Tutor. Today, he is one of the select few Ableton Certified Trainers in South East Asia, and he trains EML members in producing, performing and promoting original electronic music.

Benjamin plays keyboards and is the producer/remixer of local electronic pop duo Cosmic Armchair, which has released four EPs and one album internationally under European record label Alfa Matrix, and produces remixes for other European artists. Cosmic Armchair and NUS EML have performed at Substation, The Arts House, The Esplanade, Zouk Club, and in Bangkok, Tokyo and Chiba.

Benjamin’s latest projects include the Digital Dondang Sayang series of concerts as part of the duo Neon Nonya, exploring his ancestor’s Peranakan poetry with electronic music.

Tan E-Reng

TAN E-RENG (alter ego Falling Islands) is a Singapore-based electronic musician and synthesist who produces and performs music within a wide plethora of genres, with over ten years of experience working with Logic Pro and Ableton Live.
