NUS Resonance

Formed in 2001, NUS Resonance is NUS’ pioneer and premier collegiate a cappella group, made up of people bound by a common love for singing. Members come from diverse musical backgrounds, and they sing just about anything — from contemporary pop to choral, alternative rock to swing, and even the occasional techno tune.

NUS Resonance continually strives towards promoting a greater awareness of a cappella music both within and outside of campus. To date, their most notable achievements include securing the top position in the Singapore National A Cappella Championships (2006 – 2008, 2011, 2012, 2014, & 2015), and their biennale concert series, Vocal Obsession and The Inside Edition. Internationally, they have also won A Cappella competitions in Korea and Taiwan, most recently clinching the Gold Award at the 2016 International Kodaly A Cappella Festival in Seoul, South Korea.

Cherie Chai

Vocal Coach

Cherie Chai is Singapore’s first full-time female vocal percussionist and the founder, music director, & resident arranger for the award-winning A Cappella group 1023.

At the 2019 A Cappella Video Awards, 1023’s music video A Tamil Medley received an award for the Best Folk/World Video and was runners-up for the Best Folk/World Song at the 2019 Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards.

Cherie has worked with several fellow Singaporean performers and has put up multifaceted shows centred around collaborations between musical instruments and vocal percussion. She has also performed alongside the Malaysian vocal quartet Caipifruta and the Young Kuala Lumpur Singers as a guest vocal percussionist.

During the pandemic, Cherie conducted virtual workshops for participants from all around the globe, teaching them how to best use the equipment they already own to continue making music during lockdown situations. She also edited and mixed audio tracks for several virtual productions, ranging from individual multi-tracked songs to more complex pieces by vocal ensembles and choirs.

At the Esplanade’s 2022 production Voices – A Festival of Song, Cherie performed alongside MI6, a notable team of Singaporean choral conductors and led the inaugural Voices Festival Choir for several illustrious performances.

As an educator, Cherie conducts several school choirs in the country and coaches a cappella groups from tertiary institutions such as the SUTD Vocomotives, NTU Harmonix, SIT Just Singers, and of course, NUS Resonance. She also frequently conducts A Cappella workshops for schools in an effort to share her love for the art form with the youth of Singapore.
