Established in 1994, NUS Ballroom welcomes all to experience the captivating world of Standard Ballroom dancing. The club has been working towards promoting this elegant art form in Singapore, with the vision to provide professional training in Standard Ballroom techniques.

NUS Ballroom strives to nurture respect, resilience, confidence and sportsmanship in all members, and develop them to become proficient dancers with the ability to perform competitively worldwide. The club also aspires to maintain the largest University-level Ballroom community in Singapore, and create an inclusive space that welcomes people from diverse backgrounds and experiences.

NUS Ballroom has recently achieved significant milestones. At the 11th TDA Dancesport Championship, the club’s dance couples won three gold medals and one silver medal, competing against couples from other local universities and Singapore Ballroom dance academies. At the revered 10th Singapore Open Dance Championship, they clinched one gold and one silver medal, competing against worldwide professionals. Adding to the excitement, NUS Ballroom frequently takes the stage, such as the whimsical piece “Beauty and the Beast” which they recently presented at CAC+US: Finale, The Last Stage.

Jovyn Low

Head Coach

Jovyn comes from the 3rd generation of a Ballroom dancing family, with his grandfather being the pioneer of Ballroom dancing in Singapore. Over the course of his competitive Ballroom dancing career, Jovyn has won and achieved podium finishes in international competitions, competing against professionals in the Ballroom dancing world.

 

As a choreographer, Jovyn teamed up with Dancers Dream Studio in 2022 to form “Strictly Ballroom”. Among teams from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore, their team became the first Ballroom dance team to make the finals of Singapore’s Super24, the most prestigious and anticipated Street dance competition, organized by O school.

 

As a teacher, Jovyn has experience of more than 10 years and has taught people from all walks of life and a wide spectrum of ages ranging from 18 to 79. He has been the head coach of NUS Ballroom since 2017.

 

Jovyn strongly believes that good dancing is emotions expressed through technical skill to the music, and all dance forms are intertwined in one way or another. He also believes that dancing is a never-ending journey of learning, and hence he is still constantly upgrading his knowledge with the best in the industry.
