Last month, members of the The NUSChoir performed together with the Yale Alumni Chorus (YAC) and the Metropolitan Orchestra in a celebration of the deep ties between National University of Singapore and Yale University.

Held at the Esplanade Concert Hall on 26 June, the gala concert featured an all-Mozart repertoire. The highlight of the night was Mozart’s Requiem Op. 626 which saw the 85-strong Chorus, 56 members of The NUSChoir and 41 musicians from the Orchestra gathering on stage to perform in unison.

Kuek Jing, the student conductor of The NUSChoir shared, ‘It’s been a huge pleasure sharing the stage with the Yale Alumni Chorus once more in Singapore! Through this collaboration with YAC, I am especially inspired by the rich singing culture and heritage of Yale University. I believe that the NUSChoir has gained valuable insights and experiences from this partnership, and we are greatly honoured to be able to do so.’

The NUSChoir was the only Asian choir invited to perform at the second Yale International Choral Festival, hosted last year hosted by the Yale Glee Club in collaboration with the Yale School of Music, the International Festival of Arts & Ideas, and the Yale Alumni Chorus.

The warm exchange of music and culture continued as both choirs subsequently took to the stage at the Yale-NUS College Performance Hall on 28 June. The concert enchanted a full house of audience members who appreciated both the sacred music works sung by The NUSChoir as well as Yale favourites selected by the Chorus. The concert ended on a high note with the combined performance of Sunset by the late composer Mr Leong Yoon Pin drawing delighted cheers and applause.
