35 pillars symbolise boundaries that may be changed, prompting the audience to rethink and explore the possibilities of freedom.

About this event

Maze 3.0: Shifting Boundaries is the work of Pewan Chow, recipient of this year’s Artist of the Year (Dance) by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, and Artistic Director of Passoverdance. It is also a sequel to Maze, winner of the 2013 Hong Kong Dance Award for Outstanding Independent Production. The work addresses the boundaries in our society or systems, where “the boundaries may be constantly shifted”. It is reflected in the sets – 35 movable pillars. In some moments, the dancers dance between the pillars; in others, they move the pillars on the stage. It symbolises boundaries that may be changed and prompts the audience to rethink and explore the possibilities of freedom.

This year, Maze 3.0: Shifting Boundaries is a collaboration between 新約舞流 Passoverdance (Hong Kong) and NUS Dance Synergy. With 12 dancers from each group guided by the vision of Pewan Chow, Artistic Director of Passoverdance, and Yarra Ileto, Artistic Director of NUS Dance Synergy, Maze 3.0 provides an artistic endeavour through the medium of dance.

NUS Dance Synergy is a contemporary dance group, led by their artistic director, Yarra Illeto, that aims to achieve recognition for challenging movement and minds with a process-driven dance pedagogy and for winning hearts as a socially conscious arts group.

Focusing on the values of Inquisitiveness, Awareness, Cohesiveness and Dedication, Synergy’s dancers undergo elementary and intermediate technique training weekly, with a progressive framework that allows them to continuously improve and excel in contemporary dance. Synergy seeks out-of-the-ordinary opportunities to question, explore and discover new forms of expression. This includes site-specific and cross-disciplinary performances that challenge artistic boundaries and encourage its dancers to be bold and daring in their own creation of movement.

Passoverdance is a non-profit dance organization from Hong Kong. The company is dedicated to fostering and developing local dance culture, drilling into arts excellence, as well as discovering and nurturing new talents in the community. In recent years, the company has toured to Beijing, Shangahai, Singapore, Bahrain, Taiwan and Malaysia. With its endeavour to explore the infinite possibilities in the art of dance, Passoverdance strives to reveal the purity and uniqueness in each work, creating a deeper dialogue and interaction between the audience and the work.

This year, Passoverdance is collaborating with the NUS Dance Synergy to present the work Maze: Shifting Boundaries with 12 dancers from each group. Maze: Shifting Boundaries is the work of Pewan Chow, the Artistic Director of Passoverdance. The work addresses the boundaries in our life, where “the boundaries may be constantly shifted”. It is reflected in the sets—35 movable pillars, the ever-changing boundaries and limitations in life is translated into movements and patterns. Through constant altering formations, the dancers explores the space with shifting pillars and invites the audiences to rethink the possibilities of freedom. Maze: Shifting Boundaries has been invited to participate in “CODA Oslo International Dance Festival” in 2020 and “Festival Hong Kong 2019 – A Cultural Extravaganza at Shanghai” in 2019.
