Exuberance: An Ode to Youth presented by NUS Guitar Ensemble is a live Niibori guitar ensemble showcase that celebrates the colours and vibrancy of youth. Beginning with Anniversary March, this upbeat and whimsical piece is a celebration of newfound identity and sense of self. Along the way, experience the innocent idealism of young love through Yiruma’s Love Me. Venture into the movie world with us in the La La Land Medley, with themes of romance and chasing dreams that embody the unique optimism of youth. Come experience these pieces and many more that seek to showcase the brilliance of youth and the journey we take as we carve our own paths in the world!

Established in 1981 by Cultural Medallion recipient Mr Alex Abisheganaden, NUS Guitar Ensemble (GENUS) is the region’s first Niibori guitar ensemble. Previously comprising only classical prime guitars, the group was later modelled after the Niibori Orchestra in Japan, becoming the first guitar ensemble in Singapore to showcase the distinctive and diverse musical possibilities of the Niibori method.

As a pioneer in the Singapore guitar ensemble scene, GENUS aims to uphold a strong musical standard befitting of our status, in order to set the benchmark of musical excellence for ensembles in Singapore. At the same time, GENUS offers its members an environment that is both nurturing and challenging, in the pursuit of musical excellence and sustained improvement. Moving forward, GENUS is working towards promoting a greater love for guitar ensemble music in Singapore so as to establish the guitar art form as an integral part of the local arts landscape.

Recent productions include Springtide in March 2022; Incandescent – A City That Never Sleeps, a collaboration with NUS Dance Synergy for NUS Arts Festival 2022; and Don’t Stop Me Now in 2021.

NUS Guitar Ensemble is a member of NUS Centre of the Arts, and one of 20 co-curricular arts activity groups (CCA) distinguished as Arts Excellence Groups in NUS.

Exuberance: An Ode to Youth will be conducted jointly by our Artistic Director and Resident Conductor — Dr Robert Casteels, our Assistant Conductor — Balraj Gopal, as well as 5 student conductors.
