NUS Museum

Make Art Make Sense is a series of 3 participatory workshops using hands-on activities to expand how we think and talk about art. Engaging with objects from the NUS Museum’s diverse collections, the workshops explore the three topics of ceramics, painting, and text through a curious, fearless, and “do-it-yourself” ethos.

With guidance from emerging arts practitioners and professionals, participants will gain practical art experience—from making their own mini pots to learning painting techniques—that can further inform their understanding of art in academic and other contexts. Activities and conversations with other art enthusiasts will help participants build their vocabulary, ponder the relationship between art and words, and develop skills in speaking confidently and thoughtfully about art.

Sign up for individual workshops at $5 each, or all three at $12 in total.

How do words help us understand art?

Our third workshop Making Sense of Text looks at the relationship between the visual and verbal. With the guidance of the Make Art Make Sense organisers and NUS English Literature graduates Dylan Chng and Rachel Lim, participants will observe text in the museum and learn about different forms of art writing. Activities and meaningful conversations with other art lovers will build participants’ confidence speaking and writing about art.

Note: After the workshops, participants will also be invited to submit optional creative responses to a chosen object in the Museum’s collection. These responses and other workshop outputs may be shared on the NUS Museum website and/or social media to showcase how individuals respond to art in varied and personalised ways.
