The current state of public art is informed by the complexities of its histories, practices, and circulation across Singapore. This keynote and panel discussion will examine the transformations of public art through shifts from the post-colonial period to modernity. Here, speakers will make reference to key moments in this historical narrative: from colonial sculptures and monuments, evolving artist practice, and interventions by artist collectives, to the role of public art in placemaking and ideological functions, and finally its contexts within the university setting. The programme will end with a moderated discussion amongst panellists, followed by a Q&A with audiences.

Keynote Speaker

Professor Ho Puay Peng holds the UNESCO Chair on Architectural Heritage Conservation and Management in Asia. Having close to 30 years of experience in the academia, Puay-Peng’s main research interests are in architectural history and conservation practices, and how the knowledge can be translated in teaching and practice. He has also been appointed to many public and private boards and committees in Hong Kong, including as Chairman of the Lord Wilson Heritage Trust, member of Town Planning Board, Antiquities Advisory Board, and currently a member of Senior Advisory Board of Global Heritage Fund and a Patron of the International Dunhuang Project of British Library.
