NUS Baba House

Join us at NUS Baba House for a special Lunar New Year programme and discover the role of food in shaping our history and identity through nasi ulam: a mixed herb rice dish eaten by Peranakan families on special occasions.

The programme begins with a short talk and discussion by Food Academic Jenny Dorsey. Explore the origins of nasi ulam and how this single dish reveals the historical migration and trade networks of food and people. Afterwards, join Jenny in a discussion to explore the role of food in identity-making and how labels like “authentic” reflect specific ideals in response to cultural anxieties and nostalgia. This talk will be moderated by Baba House Programmes Manager Summer Chiuh.

Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to see a live demonstration of nasi ulam conducted by Baba House docent Audrey Koh. Learn how this labour-intensive dish is prepared and hear Audrey share her experiences growing up with the dish. Get the chance to prepare some ingredients, mix the rice and enjoy your own portion of nasi ulam at the end.

Please note that 2024 Museum Roundtable Hongbaos will not be issued at this programme.

If you are a NUS student, please use your NUS email to sign up for this programme.
