Arts Groups

Creative groups have been a part of the university experience since as early as the 1940s and many of NUS Centre For the Arts’ (CFA) groups were the first of their kind in Singapore.

Today, CFA nurtures all student arts groups across the University, the groups encompass a variety of styles and genres.

Each group is student-led and many are formally tutored by recognised industry professionals. This structured programme ensures students develop not just as artists but also as creative leaders who can realise their vision and who give back to their community.

Groups devise their own creative goals and performance plan, taking the stage across Singapore and around the world while also engaging with CFA’s various programmes to highlight their talent on campus.

Credit-bearing course for NUS arts groups

From Academic Year 2023/2024, students joining the NUS Chinese Dance, Chinese Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra and Wind Symphony will be enrolled in a year-long credit-bearing course (2 units per semester).

Through a structured curriculum along with targeted instruction, students can expect to hone their skills and deepen their practice in their respective artistic discipline. A feature of the course is the opportunity for students to collaborate in artistic programming and the operations of the arts group. Students will also have ample opportunities to connect with the community through organizing and participating in outreach events and recruitment drives. For students enrolling in CFA2101, they can also expect to contribute in leadership roles afforded by each of the arts groups.

Students may only participate in one of the arts groups for this year-long course. Students who play musical instruments that are available in more than one music group may apply to switch groups between semesters subject to audition requirements specific to the group.
